I live in the house where I was born…

a house built by my great grandparents. I walk the fields I played in as a boy, to work in the shop I built with the help of my dad. It’s a certain kind of dream come true, realized daily with hard work, patience and persistence.

I walked into a blacksmith shop for a summer job 25 years ago and it was love at first sight. I saw the fire, heard the ring of the anvil and smelled the burning coal and knew this was the work for me. To this day, heating and hammering metal engages me as much as it ever did. To my sensibilities, it is the perfect blend of physical, artistic, and practical.

With years of experience and hard work, as well as the grace of some good jobs, I have built and bought the tools I need to do hand-forged large scale architectural work. My power hammers came from turn-of-the-century sledgehammer factories. My presses have come off of Navy ships, or I have built them myself. They are made to last and will be passed down to the next generation of smiths.

Building entrance gates, grand staircases, chandeliers and furniture has allowed me to create lasting pieces that have challenged my mind, strengthened my body and fulfilled my soul. The feeling I get from completing a project where all are satisfied—client, architect, designer, builder, and myself—is the most calming and exciting feeling. This is what it’s all about for me.

I have a passion for what I do and a dedication to my craft, and it has enabled me to provide for my two daughters and myself and spend time with them as a dad. Today I feel grateful to be working at something I love, in a place I love, with the people who mean most to me.
